We were finally recuperating from our illnesses of the past week as we made our way further south, just in time for Memorial Day at The Wheatland Park Campground located on Pomme de Terre Lake about an hour north of Springfield.
This Army Corp of Engineers campground operated on a first come-first served basis and thankfully we managed to snag the last available site in the park, because we didn’t have a backup plan! Other than the lack of cell service, which forced us to get creative with Sam’s work schedule (the banner pic was Sam’s “office” for a day), this turned out to be a perfectly serviceable spot to spend the holiday. Although there weren’t a ton of activities nearby, we did find a “beach” to hang out on for a few hours as well as a little ice cream joint, “Memaw’s”, where we treated ourselves.
Overall, it was a nice, relaxing stay. In fact, we actually enjoyed not having internet for a few days as we killed the time watching a few movies that we had downloaded (Sam really liked Dazed and Confused, didn’t know what to think of Field of Dreams) and spending some quality time around the campfire.
